Introduction
The goal of this course is to introduce the topic of emerging Landscapes and Globalization. Now while this topic is clearly developing as a significant topic in landscape architecture, the seminar has another rather intriguing cross cultural international component. Specifically we will be working with colleagues at Tehran University to develop the share ideas and research. We anticipate considerable contact between students in the landscape architecture programs in Tehran and in Clemson, through a web site we will be creating. Accordingly, we expect an extraordinary opportunity to understand our shared and unique understandings of both existing and emerging landscape in a globalizing world.

Goals and Objectives
Specifically we will be working with colleagues at Tehran University to develop the share ideas and research concerning the effects of globalization on the landscape from an international perspective. This means that we will be exploring several topics related to the landscape: trans-frontier parks, the comparative reuse of landfill/dumps, landscapes sponsored by international organizations such as UNESCO, ecological modernization theory and reflexive modernization theory, and the European Landscape Convention, and others.

Since the goal of the course is to exchange ideas and research, you will be working in various groups with students in Clemson and Tehran University. These groups will be organized in two phases: the first phase is to research globalization phenomena in general, and the second phase is to develop a research question or case study concerning landscapes influenced by globalization processes. In preparation for our class, and since our colleagues in Tehran begin their semester later than we do, our seminar will begin with readings, research and presentations.

Requirements
Reading 1: Please read the handout article and be prepared to discuss the article Monday at 12:15. After a short discussion pairs of you will choose an area of study and be prepared to discuss your research the next class period. The following week the pairs will present power points of your research for class discussion.

Research Phase 1: Globalization Processes and the landscape
At the end of your our first work, preliminary readings on globalization will be given. The following class period we will begin discussions of the readings and divide into research teams of two Clemson students and two students from Tehran University. The teams will develop a research topic related to globalization and the landscape in general. The final product of this group work will be a combined PowerPoint presentation of the work done by Clemson students and the work done by their group in Tehran: Each group in Clemson and Tehran will be responsible for reporting their colleagues’ research. This final joint work will available on a secure public/academic websitepublic/academic website
Participation in Seminar Discussions: We will meet once a week to discuss about the assigned readings and development of the cross cultural teamwork and research
Website: We will have a common website that will be our most important way of communication. Each of you will be responsible for posting your findings every week. One person will be assigned specifically to be the website manager and reporting the development to the class and professor

Journal: Each student is responsible for keeping a diary of your course activities and your reflections related to cross cultural/international communication, the technological problems encountered in communication, and your interpretations of the landscape as a result of discussions with your colleagues
